What type of paint do I use to cover gloss/silk finish on walls?
I have anaglypta-type wallpaper which has been painted with a glossy/silk finish. I want to keep the paper but achieve a matt finish. What type of paint should I choose?
First wipe down paper with sugar soap with sponge, this should remove grease anddust, then rinse down with clean fresh warm water, when dry this will provide a surface to take a Matt Paint, please buy a quality paint and a decent brush. You may have to give the paper several coats and brush in all directions and finish with an upward vertical stroke if possible. Ken Nash, Painter and Decorator (01494) 452077
There is no problem using matt emulsion over the top of the exisiting paint to achieve a matt finish. Just to be sure and convince yourself try a test pot on a small area. A top tip is to buy 'trade paint' ie Crown or Dulux trade from a building suppliers. Its sometimes cheaper than paint you would buy in Homebase etc and it covers normally with one coat.
Hi Liz.
Because you have anaglypta-type wallpaper you should be ok to paint over with any paint you like. One tip, do not water the panit down this will help adhere to the existing silk paint.
