Thinkpad 600 error 161 & 163?Hi. Fed up with setting clock whenever I turn on my IBM thinkpad 600. Error 161 & 163. Would love to have the solution. If my laptop is now buggered, as it were, any suggestions for a new one?!
Thanks.

i too had a error 161 and 163 on a tp 600 E . I went to walmart and got a cr2025 watch battery for 3 dollars . I just put it in with some black electric tape and rebooted. I also entered the easy setup program (hold down f1 key while turning the power on) and reinitializing the system . works great.. but i now have error 192 . i looked up the error code on the lenavo support website and find it is my fan. anyone know a cheap place to buy a fan for this laptop besides ebay( cheapest one there was fifty dollars. Thanks in advance .

SORTED, SORTED, SORTED!!! (re: errors 161 & 163 on IBM ThinkPad 600E)
My father's TP 600E works like a charm again, partly thanks to Outdoors' post (see below, near the bottom of the page), which provided the technical guidance, and, most of all, thanks to a post I found on a French-speaking forum. For French speakers, see post #14 by Pontiac6000 (Louis-Philippe) on
http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-1691874-error-161-163-ibm-thinkpad-600e
So here's an approximate translation:
After removing the dead CMOS battery (model CR 2025), you absolutely need to boot your ThinkPad 600E WITHOUT the battery, in order to reset the errors. In other words, remove the dead battery, boot, reset date and time and click OK.
Then, when prompted to turn off your laptop ("off-on" displayed on the screen), DO NOT switch it off. Insert now the new battery (which you've previously connected to the black and red cables). Replace the cover and screw. Only now you can turn off the computer.
Then reboot and... enjoy.

got the same errors on a 560z. Just wondering whether to replace the whole CMOS battery + cable (eg on ebay for $5).
Are people having the problem when they just pop in a new coin cell, or are they replacing the whole backup battery unit?

Thanks everyone for telling us to look at the manual or go to the "Internet" and put the error codes in this new thing called "Google". WE NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS WITH OUT YOUR GREAT MIND GIVING US THE CORRECT DIRECTION.
If you don't have anything new to add, then STFU and don't say anything. (that includes spamming this response...unless you have an intelligent rebutal)
PS....go back to you X-Boxes and let us adults work on this technical problem.

After the real doom and gloom that hit when getting these errors (non techy user), then the slight relief by thinking it was a battery issue to be brought back to doom and gloom by fears of password locking hard drives and replacing system boards and hard drive replacment. Has anyone managed to solve this problem by replacing battery only ? Should I just give my PC to someone to see if they can mend ? Battery - I think I could manage system board and further hard drive issues seems over my skills. Is there really no way of getting into hard drive if password protect :0(

I replaced the 3V battery on my Thinkpad 600E after getting errors 161 & 163. The old batteries did not ever register a charge on a multimeter!
However replacing the cmos battery did not seem to fix the problem and the same error codes appeared. According to the manual in this case check the system board. I actually replaced my system board. It is a bit fiddly to replaced and you would need to almost completely dismantle the laptop. Fortunately the manual gives detailed diagrams on how to do this and this type of laptop is very modular in construction i.e. makes it easy to do. System boards can be bought on ebay and are not too expensive.
It did fix the problem but then i had another problem. When the computer loaded i was now presented with a picture of a cylinder with a '1' on the top and a locked padlock to the right of this. This now means the hard drive is locked and without the password is difficult to access. As i bought the laptop from ebay i didn't know the password and decided it was just easier to replace the hard drive, which is again available cheap on ebay. Of course after fitting the new hard drive i had to reinstall the operation system. However i can report after all this, the laptop is working just fine - although i which i had saved myself the hassle and just bought one that worked in the first place instead of being a cheapskate!

I have a Thinkpad 600E with error 161 & 163
I replaced the dead CR2025 with a new one. Have checked there is definately 3V with multimeter and still get the same error. According to the manual if its not the backup battery then check the system board. I am going to replace the system board with a new one - hope it works!!

I found a great SIMPLE solution to this so called battery/hardware NO SOFTWARE INVOLVED:
PROBLEM:
Probably a built-in bug in the microprocessors found inside the battery itself, that reports an incorrect battery charge status to CMOS as about to be empty when it is actually far from being empty and maybe full charged!
SOLUTION:
Override the reporting ability!
There are 4 pins in the battery that are contacting 4 pins in the battery slot. I've covered the 2 pins in the middle with 2 pieces of paper (those 2 pins reports the CMOS about the battery capacity), so they are now ignored and bypassed forcing the CPU to "think" it gets its power directly from an AC power.
In winxp it will probably go hibernate without any warning or get shutdowned when the battery IS REALLY EMPTY.
*try that and tell me if you succeeded my email is:
dolarim at yahoo . com (please just write "thinkpad" in subject so your letter will be read, thanks)
*another nice useful place to visit:

*I used this tip from this web site:

I have the same error, but once I press OK the computer does not go any further, it restarts and repeats the same process over and over again. Is this the same problem as everyone else?

IBM Thinkpad 380ED error codes 00161 & 00163 indicate a bad CMOS battery; instructions above by Outdoors easy to replace. For this model you'll need a CR1220 watch battery, but just pull the old one out and match it up to make sure you get the right one ( the CR1220 is about $3.50 @ Walmart, or like 1 cent on eBay). Thanks!

Peter you dont say if its a hard drive password or hard disk password.
the one that looks like a cylinder and a ? is a hard drive password
these are pretty uncrackable but some people have had success with a program called mhd3 do a search for it.
I tried it with no luck lol.
the other type is an administrator password and is saved to an eeprom chip on the motherborad so youll need a new motherboard or new chip .
You can the get the eeproms on ebay but its a bit of a delicate job soldering the old one out and the new one in.
You can get motherboards too just make sure you ask if its passworded you need a clean one
or even get the whole base it needs to be unpassworded tho.

Hi all,
I had (and still have) 161 and 163 errors at startup though I changed the cr2025 backup battery. I don't know how I can do this. Entering BIOS EasySetup doesn't allow any configuration modification that can repair my TP... Does anyone have the solution? I hope so.
What do you think about a BIOS update?

I just purchased one from IBM.
Now I can't get into the CMOS because a password is asked for (and nobody knows it).
Suggestions?

161 - Dead CMOS battery.
163 - Date and time are not set clock not updated.
Replace CMOS Batt: On the bottom of the laptop you will see a screw that holds the memory cover on. (Next to the main Batt) Remove the screw and cover. The CMOS is plugged into the motherboard it is yellow and round tucked in the side of the case. (note how the black cable is towards the center of the laptop and the positive red cable is towards the side of the laptop). Remove the cable connector from the motherboard and pull out the old battery. This can be done by either gently pulling on the cables or using an object like a toothpick and gently tugging at the old battery to free it. With the old battery removed plug in the new battery with the black ground cable towards the center of the laptop and the red towards the side of the laptop. Insert the new battery into the space the previous one set at. Reconnect the memory cover and turn on your laptop. You will have to set the time and date and may have to cycle the computer (reboot) a few times. You can get this battery (CMOS) on eBay or at a computer store they are only a few dollars. (5-8) Good luck in your repair!

I have a page on here that gives precise instructions. try a google search its headed thinkpad 600 error 161 163 192 dev 001
your cmos battery has gone you need a cr2025 to replace it you have to pull the tabs of the old one off and tape them to a new cr2025 battery.
