Is there any way I can make my pc go faster. I'm with talktalk, current speed is 6.8mb(was 2 when with tiscali) .When I put the computer on it takes about 3-4min to go from start up screen to connect on internet, then it takes about 1-2 min to connect to a web site. Is this normal as I'm sure it used to go faster when I was with tiscali.(now talktalk)I've tried a lot of things, like regularly using norton anti-virus to check for intruders.etc. regularly de fragment disk to release space, empty recycle bin. (these are things I've already been told to try) are there any other suggestions please, because at the moment its frustrating when I'm trying to contact friends etc. by the time I get on line they have gone off. Thanks P.S. any suggestions please explain in easy to understand language as I'm not really very good when it comes down to the technical things.
Try using Comodo Dragon browser. It is faster and more secure than Google Chrome. Takes a little getting used to, but worth the effort. Also try Comodo Antivurus/Firewall software. Both are free and recently beat Norton paid version comprehensively in an independent test. This will stop the unwanted software from getting on to your computer and slowing it down.
6.8mb download is fine - although you can get faster it will not help your problem...
The slow starting is down to having lots of entries in the Start Up list. Over time some harmless S/W and also some naughty S/W gets itself an entry in the Start Up list and is pre-loaded when you power up - little by little you don't notice but they can take several minutes after a few months.
You need first to deselect the entries in this Start Up list
Run box "msconfig" then click OK is one way
Windows Defender / Tools / Software explorer another way - you can deselect everything but leave in any security software for safety if you wish.
Next download Spybot Search & Destroy (free) and run it to get rid of any malicious S/W - and run it Weekly or Monthly
Download Piriform's CCleaner (free) (do not ask what the first letter C stands for) - use it most times you exit the machine to clear out rubbish - it also has a registry cleaner - run it and run it annually.
Defragment your disk - do it annually.
Consider using a web browser other than internet Explorer - many people use Firefox - I used to but have recently found that Google Chrome to be even faster - all browsers are freely available for download.
Consider downloading Process Explorer (free) which shows in pretty pictures what the machine is doing - you can also use Task manager for this but the data presentation is not so clear.
Check your start up list every few weeks or months but Spybot should stop new entries happening - or at least give you the opportunity to permit or deny anything new in there.
Your 6.8mbs is not a limiting factor - too much software trying to run at once is very probably the cause of slowness. You should not consider adding memory to the machine unless you know absolutely that you need to.
Defragmentation will help but only a little bit.
Most of your "issues" are down to the start up list.
