Hope someone can help. I inherited a used Craftsman 917.256552 riding lawn mower last summer and it worked fine. This year, I had some problems in the spring and was told to replace the battery. Did this, worked fine for a couple of months. Then it became hard for the engine to catch. When it did, it worked fine. Now I can't even get it to turn over, no click, no nothing. I just bought a new spark plug at Sears and want to replace it but I can't quite figure out where it goes! I've also replaced the air filter. I also got a new fuel filter but I think they gave me the wrong one as it doesn't look like the one there now and doesn't look like it will fit.
I'm pretty good mechanically with appliances and computers, but lawn mowers are new to me!
I've had problems with my craftsman as well. My mower was running along fine and then it just died. After that, I can't get it to turn over. Nothing just dead. The last time this happened I called the service man from Sears and they came out and fixed it. If you open the hood on the right hand side of the mower you will see a set of wires running to the engine from the ignition. Sometimes those wires become disconnected or the fuse blows. Simply replace the fuse. The things you mentioned, sparg plug, air filter have nothing to do with your problem.
