The light on my immersion is staying on?

all you have to do mate is turn power off and swap the red or brown wires around ,you have put the feed wire into the load side of the switch,no big deal

This is a simple wiring job, whihc you have got wrong and you clearly do not have sufficient knowledge or abilaity to perform the task with certainty of the result being safe.

Please get this work checked by a qualified electrician. Electrical mistakes can be lethal.

It will not necessarily be you that suffers.

It could be your wife and children.

Then the switch is back to front - the incoming power is causing the lamp to light - the usual arrangement is for the outgoing power to do that.

Leave the wires exactly as they are - disconnect them - physically turn the switch around and reconnect the wires - Viola!

Sorry. Should have said it is an immersion type switch. It is being used as a remote switch for an unaccessible socket. The remote part works in that the washing on the socket only works when the switch is in the on position. It just would be better if the light went off when the switch was in the off position. Thankyou

The neon indicator just shows that the power is turned on - it does not show that the water in the immersion heater tank is up to temperature when it goes off - the indicator will be lighted all the time the switch is in the on position.

You do not say if your water is getting hot or not - if you get hot water then things are OK.

Your comment about the "outgoing black and red" is confusing and unusual - it suggests that the immersion heater might be on a ring circuit - my understanding and experience is that they usually sit on a dedicated feed.

Immersion heaters should be on their own dedicated circuit, 16a breaker and a 20a DP switch, not a fused spur. Having said all that there are plenty around wired the way your's is, it was the usual way of doing it some years ago.
