How do I get my computer running like brand new?Surfing is EXTREMELY SLOW
Opening up my computer is EXTREMELY SLOW
EVERYTHING IS SLOW!!!
I think I need to do a major overhaul and completely clean out and reinstall everything.
Also are there any recs on what security software I need to add to my pc? Seems like no matter what I do disk defrag, virus scan, avoiding certain websites, shutting down daily, spyware scan and removal, nothing is long term and it just gets worse.
Oh I have a Dell 2400 or 4200 bought in Feb 2002
Intel Pentium 4 CPU
2.52 Ghz
256MB of Ram
Help where you can.
Thanks in Advance

IF YOU HAVE AN ORIGINAL WINDOWS INSTALL DISK, YOU CAN WIPE OUT EVERYTHING AND INSTALL WINDOWS, BUT YOU LOSE ALL YOUR SAVED STUFF.
BUY A SECOND HARD DRIVE, PUT WINDOWS ON THAT AND USE YOUR FIRST HARD DRIVE AS A SLAVE, AND YOU CAN SAVE ALL THE STUFF.
CLEAN OUT ALL THE TEMP FILES, DEFRAG, REMOVE TROJANS WORMS AND VIRUSES, REMOVE UNUSED PROGRAMS , LOTS OF WAYS TO MAKE IT FASTER.
GET ANOTHER STICK OF RAM.
DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.
YOU CAN ADD A STICK OF RAM AND SURFING WILL BE WAYYY FASTER.
BRANDS WONT MATTER JUST BUY WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD.
TRY A 1 GIG STICK. BUY IT ONLINE ITS CHEAPER,
MAKE SURE YOU FIND OUT WHAT TYPE YOU NEED DDR DDR2 SDR CALL BEST BUY AND THEY CAN TELL YOU, THEN LOOK IT UP ONLINE.
IF YOU REFORMAT AND RELOAD WINDOWS, IT WILL BE BRAND NEW.
THEN YOU WILL SPEND 4 HRS UPDATING.
BUT YOU WILL ALSO GET RID OF ANY VRUSES /TROJANS /SPYWARE/ADWARE THAT YOU HAVE.
AND YOUR PC WILL BE FAST AGAIN.

IF you can access the Internet without major problems, I would advise going to McAfee's or Symantec's websites and running their online scanners. If they don't find anything, then I'd say (without having more info) that you need more RAM or your PC needs to load less items at start-up.
If the scanners find something (trojan, virus, etc), go to downloads.com and get Spybot Search & Destroy v1.4, Ad-aware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster v3.5.1 and AVG Free v7.5. Install ALL and update them.
Next, DISCONNECT from the Internet and run a scan with AVG. After that, run a scan with Spybot. Last, run a scan with Ad-aware. Delete EVERYTHING they find using the respective program's delete/fix function.
Lastly, reboot and see how your PC "acts". If it's still slow, come back and let us know. I have other options that can help you at that point.

Windows XP Recommends 256MB RAM. That is fine if your using your machine off-line. 512MB is Minimum for Internet usage today. you would benifit more with 1GB RAM. I have a similar machine running Windows XP and with 512MB RAM installed, When the antivirus scans begin, the actual available RAM drops as low as 160MB,and I've watched it drop down to 56MB already. By installing 1GB RAM, your machine will run much better. Also, look at your Hard Drive, if it is only a 4400-RPM or 5400-RPM, I'd consider buying a 7200-RPM Hard Drive which will Boost your performance .

Many things cause a computer to be slow, the most common is an virus infection. Virus checkers are near useless at catching newly written viruses. I suggest you go for somthing a little more comprehensive than a virus checker, look at cybersight home user, its currently free. Grab it while you can. www.cryptic.co.uk
