I had my walls replastered and made the mistake of using a silk finish paint for my first coat . I used a watered down soloution for the first coat but it is now becming really flakey in places and when you wipe the walls to clean them you wipe away the paint! Any hints or tips on how to remedy this? Any help would be gratefully received.
Thank you for the reply Grant. I have just also had my living room replastered and I have followed your advice this time and have used the correct primer needed and allowed decent drying out time. As for my kitchen paint, I sanded it down and applied some of the primer i got for my other room, let it dry out and applied a matt version of the paint I had previously. Many thanks for the help, at least I haven't made the same mistake twice now!
Marie, your first mistake was using an expensive topcoat as a primer, you should have used a good quality oil based alkali resistant plaster primer.Allowed it to dry for at least 24 hours and then apply at least two coats of your topcoat. how long did the plaster dry for, the building industry norm is to allow it to dry for between 6 to 8 weeks to allow all the moisture to escape. (this depends on the ambient temperature) you say that "when you wipe the walls to clean them you wipe away the paint!" this shows that you have applied the coating way too thin. contact the paint supplier and ask for more advice or send me an email and i'll try to help more
Do I need to remove all the paint or just the flakey bits? I would hate to have to try and take off all the paint already there. ........thanks for the reply
