My rod and reel refuses to cast properly. How can I fix it?
I have two relatively new, inexpensive (~$30) rod and reels (less than 2 years old) which simply refuse to cast more than a few feet. When I cast, the line hangs up after playing out a few feet. I can pull line off of the reel after the cast, but it does not play out easily. Pulling line out and re-winding helps, but only minimally. Also, the reels don't re-wind reliably unless tension is placed on the line. Can anyone help ?
Try stripping all the line off the reel and replacing it with a thinner/lighter breaking strain. It sounds like you have a thick heavy line that is forming coils as it peals off the spool of the reel and restricting its passage through the rod eyes. When you refill the spool make sure the new line comes close to the lip of the spool, if you wanted you could simply strip a 100m of the old line and top up with the new thinner stuff.
