I think I may have the opposite problem. I have located the little lever Jeff mentioned, but it appears to be stuck in the down position, causing the paper to jam once it hits it. What makes the lever go up? What would keep it from going up?

Thanks very much for that. Although I looked all-round - I never spotted the problem until I read your reply. A little metal spring was stuck behind the lever/sensor. And as it was a metal spring, until I knew what to look for, it always looked like it belonged there :-)
On the other hand I have no idea if the little metal spring belonged to some other part of the printer in the first place, or it is a foreign object. Anyway, the printer seems to be working fine at the moment.
That, of course, not taking into account that these printers (and few other Lexmark/Dell with same/similar feeding mechanism) seem to develop quite quickly feeding problems (sounds like they could do with the services of a good nutritionist :-) )
Anyway, thanks for the useful info.

I had the same problem. There is a lever in the paper path that had been pushed over so that it was stuck in the up position. The printer always thought that there was paper in the feed path.
I got to it by opening the printer as if I were going to change ink cartridges. Using a flashlight, find the sensor lever, just to the right of center under the print head bar. Make sure that this lever operates freely by gently moving it. It should normally be in the down position. If it is stuck in the up position for any reason, it will cause the problem you described.
