How do I give my computer an I.P. address?

I would like to lnk my computer to the server allowing me access to my work files and the internet. I have been told to change the IP address on both machines but I am not sure how to do this. I have installed all the network points etc and can access this on my lap top so I have eliminated any problem in this area.Cheers Sue

Hi Sue,

If you have a server, you could set the server up as a DHCP server, which means it will dish out dynamic IP adresses to any clients on the network, IE your notebook.

Go to Add Remove Programs and select Add Remove Windows COmponents, on the erver this is. From here you will be able to add DHCP to your server. If you are running 2003 server then the first screen to boot up, manageing server roles I think it is called will allow you to add DHCP from there.

Your noteoobk will need to be set up to "Obtain a DHCP address".

Have a look at the IPconfig utility from a command prompt too. Ipconfig /? for help.

Hope that helps,

John.

not a solution but pointers!

ok to change an ip address you need to find the tcp/ip connection in your network settings go to properties and alter it. note: look at the servers settings if possible and find out what the subnet mask is as they need to be the same. the most common is 255.255.255.0 but find out if you can.

o.k. 1. if your server is not in the sense a "true server" then your using peer to peer. with p2p know that the workgroup names have to be the same. by default the workgroup name is "workgroup" if your not you cant see each other.

sometimes it can take a while for pc's to see each other use the search for computers tool by right clicking on "my network places" or network neighbour hood on some PCs.

3. if your notebook works then mirror it's connection settings and vary the ip a little (the last 3 digits) and the computers name.

it's a pain in the arse good luck!
