How to insulate and block an electrical socket?

I have removed an old wall mounted electric fire, I disconnected it from the socket which had an on/off switch (just below the fire) and now need to safely insulate and block the existing electrical supply/hole in wall, I do not intend to use this socket again. Do I...
1: Detach each incoming wire from socket.
2: Cover each wire with insulating tape independantly
3: Insert wires back in hole and plaster accordingly

This is what seems most logical to me, but I would appreciate any tips to make sure it will be hazard free.

Many Thanks

you have to establish where it is fed from , it could well be a direct circuit from your consumer unit , and if it is then removing its fuse and disconnecting its cables could well be sufficent , however it could be a spur off your sockets , or if there is 6 cables in , 2 reds 2 blacks and 2 earths then it is directly in your sockets , so really good insulation and seperation is required, but it can be done, if 6 cables then join up your 2 reds to each other , join up your blacks to each other and your earths to each other too, to keep your ring main constant, and if you sell up then let your buyers know that the cables are there.

call an electrician. If it was installed properly it will need disconnecting from the consumer unit. If not it could be connected to a ring main ect.
