How can I fix my American Standard toilet?

I recently replaced the "flapper" in the tank. The new universal flapper works just fine, too fine in fact and that is the problem. The new flapper closes too fast, however, and does not allow adequate water from the tank to flow into the bowl.

What can I do to correct this problem?
