The shaft on my Hoover (U4387) had a reverse thread. I had to turn it clockwise to remove the round retainer nut.

Tape the shaft (that holds the belt) from damage due to vice grips. Take vice grips clamp on the shaft to keep from turning. Screw off fan in clockwise direction.

I've got a hoover elite II Model # u4689-910. One of my fan blades is broken as well. I've tried everything to get the old fan off. I've done the same thing as Jimbob above. I've taped and vice gripped the motor shaft and tried to remove the fan. It broke free and now turns without the shaft turning but will not thread off. How do the service people replace these? I'm at my wits end.

Hi, on my Hoover (model U4311) the fan slips on to the shaft and is then held by a heat-insulating washer. It looks like some sticky stuff is used to make it rotate with the shaft better. My replacement fan was: H-38755011. I had to saw through the old fan - I couldn't get it unstuck. Hesco had the parts and schematics. Hesco U4309/11-series part number 24 is the pulley which screws onto the shaft and holds everything in place, and allows the belt to drive the shaft. I had to remove about 4 screws on the top-side to get the fan off, not counting the ones holding the housing on. One of the screws was tricky - I had to angle in from the side or else remove a part I didn't really want to remove. I was afraid I would break it.

My Hoover Elite - I had to remove the motor housing. One side of the motor shaft that drove the belt for the brush, the other side of the motor was the broken fan. The fan screws on to the shaft. To unscrew it, you need to grip the shaft that drives the belt and hold it steady. I used vice grips and covered the shaft with duct tape to protect it. Once I could hold that shaft fixed, I simply screwed off the old fan and screwed on the new one.
I hope this helps
