Fiat Brava 1.6 - knocking/rattle when clutch depressed?
The knocking is loud but the gears/clutch seem OK otherwise (no obvious slipping). The problem only really occurs when stationary or in low gear and can be countered with a little gas. If I took it to a clutch specialist I think they would try and sell me a new clutch (would be cheaper to scrap!), how can I stop the rattle? Good runner otherwise with recent new brakepads and injectors for MOT.
Now oil leaking from engine (drivers side). Is this related?

Be careful who you get to look at it. I reckon I could have had a couple of extra years for the sake of an engine rebuild/new engine - would have cost a bit mind you. It seems France was a trip too far. So long now.

From past cars I've had, the obvious thing that springs to mind is the thrust bearing. It can rattle quite happily for a long time but of course it will eventually cause snags. It is cheap to replace, but only if you're willing and able to get in and do it yourself. It's also a good chance to have a look at the clutch a bit closer. Dirty hands time I'm afraid!
