How can I fix my Potterton EP2000 controller? My heating switches on and off at will. I think the timer control needs a new battery but I can't see how to get to it. There don't appear to be any screws and the cover won't move when forced in any direction.

I have the old brown one ,my battery died years ago but it still works . When mine goes wrong I've found if you unplug the fuse, wait a minute then replace the fuse it seems to correct the problem . My ep2000 is about 35 years old , running an old baxi lfe back boiler .

The display on my Potterton EP2000 controller has completely disappeared, and the heating system has stopped working. It first happened yesterday and went back on when I fiddled with the battery but it has gone again and I cannot get it to work.

There is a small slot on the lower side of the EP2000, a small tool inserted here and pushed upwards should release the top of the unit which in turn unclips from its hinges which are under the upperside of the clock unit.
The battery is located in the underside of the clock unit.
Where you'll get a new battery, I don't know.

Isolate the mains supply to the unit. There maybe a fused spur nearby. Get your fingers into the right side of the cable entry slot at the bottom of the casing and pull hard but be careful not to pull it too far (restrict movement to about 1/2 cm). There is a plastic catch behind which can be hard to release but a strong pull should do it. Alternatively lever open with a flat screwdriver but don't put it in the casing groove nearest the front face; it must be put in the groove further from the face. When the bottom edge is free, lever the top in a similar manner and pull the body away keeping it as near upright as possible. You don't want to bend the connector pins in the body.

Just wanted to say thanks to Stewart for posting the operating instructions. There was one of these installed into the flat we moved into recently, use had worn away many of the descriptions for the settings, so it was very hit and miss whenever we tried to set it! This has sorted out the things we got wrong.

100mAh is discontinued from RS (3/V110H), try 150mA version
3.6V model 3/V150H
Ordered from ebay.... use 3/V150H to search.

Yes they do - the brown ones at any rate. Mine has a 3.6V 100mAh ni-cad, push-fit battery. From the sound of it, either the switch or possibly, judging by the condition of mine, the relay contacts have gone high impedance. Easily sorted with a cleaning strip and suitable spray! One point to note is the under-rated schottky diode that has heated up and burnt the board. No doubt some cost-cutting effort that risks a fire!

Mike's right - it has A BATTERY. For storing on/off times only. It has nothing to do with the switching circuitry.
Mine just started 'fitting' and I've traced it down to the control switches being worn out. You can buy modern equivalents for about £22, or souped up really modern versions for £50.
Don't waste money on a battery if the unit is flicking the HW/CH on and off.

Battery can be replaced by RS component part number 591-477, if still available.

hi.. to get to your battery look at bottom right of unit there is a groove use this then your thumb to prise off outer casing.
you will then see the battery mine blue. 3.6 volts
my problem was my 3 amp fuse was blowing after freeing my switchers this seemed to cure it.
yes i had same problem with my heating, radiators kept warm this seems a common problem as i thought i had to have both switches set to on position.
found this was not the case also had problems with my pump will replace that but u can also if need be replace your ep2000 from around 45 pounds.
hope this is of some help.

if u have a brown type timer with sliders , u can open the clock to get to the battery by looking under the clock below the forward/reverse button & in between the the recessed band that goes all the way round timer look for a little screwdriver slot ,push a small flat bladed screwdriver into slot & push up at the same time as lifting bottom of clock up,piviot carefully {as if the timer has a hinge at the top} or you will bend the pins to refit line up top & pins and piviot down until it clicks home hope this helps
