How can I dismantle an Aqualisa Varispray cassette?
We were still using the Aqualisa shower head that was fitted when we moved into our new house 12 years ago. Last week I tried to descale it and it seems to be completely jammed now. It's the type that has little plastic spikes that poke through the holes the water comes through in order to clear out accumulated limescale. This happens when you turn the rim of the head to change from full shower to a sort of power jet. A new "cassette" costs about £40, so I was hoping I could find a way of fixing the old one.
Thanks George,
Just repaired mine. A rubber grommet had come off the spring and blocked one of the spray channels. To reassemble I just tried re-positioning the assembly and tightening the screw until the head rotated smoothly through all three positions. Just wonder if it's possible to obtain the two spring located grommets as they appear to be the weak link in the assembly. Mine had deformed, even though the head is just over a year old. The water is very hard here though, which I'm sure doesn't help.
Brilliant. I had puzzled for ages on how to get the thing apart and once I did - yes the rubber grommet had been pulled out. Simply replaced in its orifice (it was a bit deformed) and it all worked again. 5 minutes.
Thanks
Great tip above. Dismantled and repaired my Varispray cassette in just a few minutes. The jet selection is achieved by two little spring loaded rubber grommets which align with different holes in the baseplate as the head is rotated. One of these had been dragged out of its seating. TIP: THIS WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY TRYING TO ROTATE THE HEAD WHEN THE UNIT WAS DRY, WITH NO WATER TO LUBRICATE THE RUBBER GROMMETS.

Health warning – there is a lot of scope to make mistakes, so only do this as last resort be prepared to buy a new cassette if you can’t put it back together or lose/brake a part in the process.
For my Aqualisa Varispray cassette (3 lots rubber jets surrounding 6 plastic inner jets):-
1. Insert long nose pliers into two of the centre plastic jet holes and gentle unscrew the middle.
2. With the middle part removed a single screw is revealed when this is undone you can fully dismantle the cassette.
Tip – use a crayon to mark the alignment of the inner part/s to the 2 holes that let the water in as there are 3 ways these can fit back together, but some do not allow the correct jet selection.
