banging pipes? When I turn on the taps the pipes make a banging noise which seems to be loudest in the boiler,if I turn the taps on and off slowly then the noise is not so bad, does this mean I have something wrong with the pressure( the stop cock is open about half to three quarters) If I was to adjust the stop cock would this help without affecting anything else e.g. boiler etc. The loudest noise seems to be when the washing machine is calling for water, but there is no way I can slow down the flow like I can do with the taps..Does anybody know what the problem is and any way to solve it. Thanks for any help

You probably need a new stopcock, there is a spindle inside that wears and rattles about in the hole when it is drawing water causing the banging noise. You don't say if it is 1/2-3/4 TURNS open or the amount from shut to open,if it is half way between open and shut you probably don't need that much(unless you live in a poor supply area)use a jug and turn a tap on full and count up until it is full(you don't have to be to precise)shut the stopcock off and turn it 1/4-1/2 TURNS on then fill the jug again counting up,if you have near enough the same times your getting close, open the stop a little more if you need to,play about with it until the noise reduces but you may not eliminate it( filling the jug lets you know you are getting about the same water flow)If you hold the stop and have someone turn the taps on and off you will feel the thud in the stop, you know then that's the problem, you may have air in the pipes but that's another story.Good luck.

get water pressure checked, sounds like it could be high, if so install a PRV to manage the pressure
