banging pipes/noise in boiler?

I've been reading some of the questions/answers on this site, some are similar to a problem i've got. That is banging pipes, I've turned down the stop cock, this has made the pipes quieter, but the noise seems now to be more in the boiler, At the moment the stop cock is open halfway, I still have plenty of pressure, is it safe to close it more and not affect the boiler/washing machine ,(the loadest noise is when the washing machine is calling for water, and the valve has to open quick, could I close the valve on the washing machine valve? or would this cause the machine to go faulty). Also when the water is not running and the boiler has been idle for a while, the boiler seems to make a shuddering noise, which last for about 2-3 secs and may happen every 2-3 mins, does anybody know the reason why this happens as the boiler is a worcester junior and is only 18 months old.Any help with the above matters would be gratefully received. Thanks

sounds like high mains inlet pressure, it needs to be tested and see what your incoming mains pressure is, this can be rectified by fitting a pressure reducing valve which will set and keep your incoming main at a constant lower pressure. There are various other cures one of which is fitting a shock arrestor on the mains supply which will take up the initail surge of water pressure. If the problem has come about after your new boiler has been fitted or there has been local work by the water authority it will be advisable to seek professsional help as it is not advisable to DIY this sort of job.

it sounds as if you have a very high mains inlet pressure so you can turn the stopcock off further the boiler only needs 10-11 litres per min. supply re the washer it would be extremely difficult to adjust the supply the boiler is difficult to diagnose if you live in a flat your boiler might be reacting to other tenants turning their taps off suggest you contact water board for advice
