water hammer?I've been reading this sight about noises in pipes. Some of these are similar to a problem i've got, that is my pipes make a banging noise when taps are turned on.also loudest when washing machine calls for water. A lot of answers suggest a pressure releasing valve or an arrester being fitted. If i didn't do anything about it could it cause damage to my boiler or the pipes. I've turned the stop cock down as low as it will go before stopping the water, but this hasn't helped.. So if I was to fit an appliance to the pipes which one do i go for and is it expensive(as I'm out of work)Any advise or information would be received with great appreciation.
Also I've noticed that after running the hot water the central heating pipe going to the radiator closest to the boiler warms up slightly even though heating is off, but soon cools down again, is this normal.. Thanks for any help in above matters..

When the hot water in my house was run, a high pitched sound could be heard after wards. This I later identified this noise caused by vibrations in the cold water supply pipe which was filling up the cistern. When the cistern was full, the noise stopped. I tried making sure this pipe was tight, turning down the pressure via the mains stopcock, all to no avail.
Then I fitted a new ball valve in the loft cold water system and the problem was solved instantly. I am not a plumber just a DIYer but it might be something you want to try. I got the whole replacement ball cock for less than a tenner and fitted it in ten minutes. Problem solved!
Hope this help someone.

the main cause for water hammer is pipework not clipped out properly & when taps or appliances are turned on, the movement of water makes them move - hence the noise. Adding more clips to affected areas will help.
As for the boiler, that sounds like some sort of by pass, to stop the boiler heating water & pushing against a closed valve which would be more of a problem, but not sure as to why this would be happening when you run hot water
