I suggest the owners just replace them with a non inverter model. Try to find non-Chinese manufacture. Right before this happened it got so hot on the top no one could touch it. Inside the unit punched through the top of the cavity there is a grille covered by a paper label which caught fire due to cooking fumes saturating it over time, yet the user manual does not mention this design flaw (covering an unused vent grille with a paper label in the presence of organic steam from food, and there being no way to really properly clean this). Not to mention the germs that could live there and fall back down onto the food. Same deal here- -runs a few seconds, makes a few zapping buzzes, shuts down. unplug - plugin, resets it. Disconnecting the MAG lets the thing run but no way to check the inverter without a MAG, so it cost $120 and is 5 years old, it is going to be replaced. What happened to microwave ovens that lasted 10 years? the answer is "Chinese appliance". You get what you pay for. $120 for something that lasts 5 years and is not easily repairable. Ok. fine, time for a new one as I'm not taking chances on this one due to the 'gambling' to guess if it is the inverter or MAG and having to pay for both. Maybe I will buy a non-inverter model this time. I can diagnose that kind easily. simple=good. Non-Chinese product=good.

I have an old Panasonic Microwave and it recently just stopped heating. The timer will count down and the display works but it won't heat anything.

I just repaired mine, it was the magnetron. It shut off after 23 seconds was the symptoms.

1. Take it back to the store and exchange it for something else.
2. It's got a 5-year warranty on the magnetron-take it back for repair.
2. Unplug it and make it into a terrarium.
3. Consign it to E-Waste at the quarterly event in your area.
Preventive medicine, maybe: Magnetrons can burn out if the oven is run when it's empty-a standing wave is set up reflecting the energy back into the tube, effectively cooking it.
Please remember not to handle magnetrons with slightly pink or purple ceramic insulators: they contain beryllium oxide, a serious respiratory chemical hazard which is also a carcinogen.
With apologies (but not to Panasonic),

Well, here's my story: my Panasonic microwave [NN-S262BF, with inverter] recently failed. It would only run for 2 seconds, making a clicking sound, then shut off. Being a do-it-yourselfer, I searched online for my symptoms and suspected the magnetron. I bought a new one for only $40 at partstore.com, and replaced it.
After reassembly, it did indeed run for 2 minutes and boil 8 ounces of water -- success! Or so I thought... after I reinstalled it over the stove, it failed again with the same exact symptoms. Argh...
So, back to the internet and I even called a local repair shop. They convinced me the problem was the inverter, so I bought a new one for $162 at partstore.com. I just completed that surgery this evening, and now it runs for precisely 23 seconds and shuts off -- never clicking, never heating. Now I'm cursing and losing DIY points with the wife :(
So, my latest theory is that the bad inverter fried my magnetrons, but it'll cost me another $40 for a new one to find out. Does any one out there actually know anything about this stuff and can give me any advice? The unit is 5 year and 4 months old (just outside the 5-year magnetron warranty), and I had to replace the PC board a few years ago when it failed.
Thanks in advance!

On any of the Panasonic Microwaves with an inverter, if your unit runs for a short time and then shuts off without heating the food, your problem will typically be in either the inverter or the magnetron. A trace signal is sent from the main timer circuit board through the inverter and then back to the main board. If the signal is interupted or there is a failure in the high voltage circuit, it will shut down the unit. The only way to repair the unit is to determine which part is bad, most commonly either the mag or the inverter, and replace it. There is no magic reset button, or anything you can do from the from the front of the unit.

Low voltage power supply problem. Check the controller board behind the keypad. It's probably built right on there.
