There is a much easier method then that. Unplug then unscrew your Video Recorder, and you will see where your tape is stuck (obviously). Next to it should be a gear. Rotate this gear backwards (or towards you if looking at it in the front) and the video shall eject. Dont worry about the bit where the video goes in, it shall go up with the video.

VCR's are a bit complex mechanically. There are several possibilities that could be at work here:
1. Bad belts - if this is belt driven, the belt may simply be stretched and require replacement.
2. Dirty tape path - residue of some kind is interfering with the mechanism, causing the unit to shut down.
3. Out of alignment - a gear may have jumped a tooth, throwing off the load / unload mechanism
4. Warped or glazed idler tire - if the tapes are getting munched, it could be this.
Drop me a line via my website - www.electricalrepairlinks.com - with a couple of digital pictures, I might be able to identify the cause - also, I am working under the assumption that the tapes loaded completely then got stuck - when you e-mail, please clarify the process through which the tape gets jammed.
