When I power-on my Polaroid PDM-0711 the screen lights up (solid blue) but nothing else happens. The disc does not seem to spin either. I have seen another one of these listed on eBay with the same problem...can it be fixed or should I just go buy a new portable DVD player?
I have the same problem with mine. You can get an out-of-warranty replacement for $95 plus shipping to return the old unit (~$5?). Call 1-866-289-5168 to speak with a customer service person about this deal. They told me it would availabe forever (whatever that means).
Walmart has the unit for new online for $119.87 at: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3600688 but it is out of stock. The 3-year warrantty is only $14.33.
I saw at the Poloraid site that this unit is no longer being manufactured: http://www.polaroid.com/global/detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441763503&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574488338773
It looks like you can buy the same unit used (or maybe refurbished) for less on eBay, but the out-of-warranty exchange gets you a new 3 month warranty.
Mine broke after about 4 months. I wish I bought the 3-year extended warranty on this! Oh well. Maybe next time.
I have also opened up the unit to see if the problem was something simple to repair. My best guess is that the drive motor is bad, so if I could figure out a way to just order a replacement motor, it might be cheap enough to repair myself. The customer service person would not (or could not) give me the detailed info I needed, but she did say a local electronics repair company may be able to help. That is, if I could find one that is willing to do the legwork on figuring out the part number and how to order it. It doesn't sound worth all that, but I hate to just ditch this thing. We bought two at the same time, and the other one works fine.
