Black smoke from diesel engine?I have a Puegeot Boxer motorhome first registered in 1998 and has had little use from new, in fact it has only covered 23,000 miles.
Now I know nothing about engines so please bear with me, on starting up from cold I get a puff of black smoke and even when up to running temperature if I accelerate again I get black smoke issuing from the exhaust. Can anybody give me any reasons for this and what may need to be done to cure it. Many thanks for any help.

think forte would do a product, guy I spoke to said empty half the tin and give high revs for 10 mins then empty the can and repeat, hasn`t seen the van since so it would be worth a go for little money, would maybe try another fuel conditioner also at the same time, try draining the filter a wee bit and put direct into the filter and the rest into the tank, sorry cant remember the make of intake cleaner but good luck anyway

black smoke is usually a sign of unburnt fuel,it is very difficult to say what your problem is and would start by changing the filter, the egr valve may be worth giving a clean also, there is a product on the market also which is an aerosol which is sprayed into the air intake and this cleans out the intake system, sorry cant remember the make but other guys I have spoken to swear by it,before you start getting into injectors and pumps these are cheap options and worth a go,good luck

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I have taken 2 trips to Somerset since buying it which is a round trip of close to 500 miles each time on the M6 & M5 at speeds of 55 to 65 mph and I also used a carton of Forte fuel conditioner before the first of the 2 trips. Are there any other things I can try before putting it in the hands of a diesel mechanic. (Oh my aching wallet !!!)
