How can I replace the bottom rubber seal Fowler ware toilet ?
the toilet is constantly running slightly in the pan, so I wanted to replace the bottom rubber seal (the one that is raised when you push the button to flush the toilet). But on opening the cistern, the plastic mechanism is surrounded by an open plastic box, which is somehow attached to the cistern base and I can't remove it. The toilet type has the cistern attached to the pan concealing the cistern water release pipe, so I can't undo it from the outside. Do I need to remove the cistern altogether just to change this rubber seal?
I've just replaced mine after visiting several plumbing shops for advice - one gave the correct advice the other was way off.
1. Turn off water tap to loo and flush so cistern is empty.
2. Take the lid off.
3. Put your hand into the inner plastic surround right down below the top workings and twist the body of the inner works about 20 degrees anti clockwise.
4. You should now be able to pull up the inner workings.
5. At the base you will see a black round "seating washer. Remove that washer over the bottom plastic housing.
6. Replace the washer with a Fix-A-Loo seating washer that suits Fowler "k" valve.
7. NOTE: No need to remove the inner part just pull the washer over the base.
8. Put inner workings back in cistern and push down then twist clockwise about 20 degrees.
9. It will a day or so for the new washer to seat itslef and stop the water running.
10. Send me your email address and I can send photo of the seal back in its place.
Yes, the fowler mechanism inside is really difficult to access due to all the surrounding 'plastics' ...can anyone help?
I used to fix my really old toilet with no problems ...am now sorry I had it replaced as this one looks impossible!
