The Honda GVC160 5.5 on my lawnmower runs rough, blows black smoke and fouls the plug (heavy black soot). It also burns fuel very fast. I assume it is running rich but don't know how to adjust the mixture. Any other possibilities?
You could have a broken cam pulley. There was a recall on that part in 2003, I believe.
Tom,
if you are still around, what did you do exactly w/ the intake valve seal? I heard a clanking in my motor even though it has plenty of oil so I popped off the valve cover. The rocker arms seem to operate ok to me. When you say the intake valve was stuck to the seal, what do you mean? It's snug up against the spring but other than that, how could you tell it was stuck and no oil was getting where it needed to be?
thanks anyone
I have a Honda 5.5 vertical that's two years old I've changed oil three times using Honda oil and last weekend we were splitting wood and shut it down to take a break and refuel and the thing wouldn't start! &^%$# So today I cleaned the carburetor and rolled the motor over and noticed the intake valve was not moving so I took off the valve cover and sure enough the valve was stuck do to the valve seal which sealed out all oil! Real freaking smart Honda @#$% I freed up the valve and took off the seal and the I split wood for four and a half hours and it ran great!
i have the same problem. 5.5 honda. i googled this and many more are in the same boat. it has something to do with auto choke. it should have been a recall.
Further to previous answer, more likely to be a blocked air intake. Try replacing the air filter. There is an air adjustment screw on the carb but you have to remove the air filter assembly to reach it. If you do not have the proper test equipment any adjustment to the air screw while the air filter is removed is a bit hit and miss, but opening it 1/4 turn at a time and try replacing the filter should improve with practice.
Sounds like the needle and seat are getting stuck causing a rich condition .....carb overhaul or run some type of cleaner thru it
Could be a laquer problem from leaving gas in it for extened periods of time
