Old Jones sewing machine how can I fix the tension?I recently bought an old hand crank Jones sewing machine on a car boot sale. It has the old boat shaped shuttle.
It threads up fine and cranks ok but the tension is all wonky.
The top stitch is fine but underneath is all loopy.
Can any one tell me how to fix it please?

Hello Jay,
It will be trial an error, Thread the machine up, then with the presser foot down and the needle threaded, put your thumb just above the eye of the needle and you should only just about be able to pull the thread through, if it pulls out without any effort then you need to tighten the top tension but only slightly and try again, keep doing this until you have the thread only just pulling through.
With the shuttle, you will see a small screw and a large screw, with the bobbin in the shuttle you should just be able to pull the thread through, make sure the thread goes under the big spring, if it pulls through too easily, just tighten the large screw a little bit until you can feel some tension on the thread.
When you thread the machine to begin with make sure the presser foot is in the up position. and make sure the thread goes between the tension discs completely.
