DAL Cistern?Like others on this site we've constantly got water leaking into the toilet bowl. None of the suggestions on this site work - no pimles on the washers that need bursting for example!
It doesn't leak until the water fills to about 1.5 inches high in the cistern then the leaking starts in the bowl and it's leaking so much it's almost the same as flushing.
We've had a plumber round and he's baffled as there seems to be no obvious reason for this and could only suggest replacing the cistern.
We need to find out where we can get a replacement or some advice from someone in the know.
Help! We've just had to shell out five hundred pounds on our water bill!!!
Thanks
Rachel

Thanks Paul Cunningham.
I called Grohe spare parts dept on 0845 1264141 and ordered the Grohe 42137 single flush valve @ £15 plus vat plus £4.50 postage. Ordered Monday at noon received Tuesday morning 11am. Now thats what I call service.I did not bother just buying the discharge piston, at this price the whole unit is cheap and other suppliers wanted nearer £40. Fitted in minutes and works a treat.

First, I'd like to thank Yousuf for his post. I was on the brink of calling a plumber (££££) for the problem described by the original poster until I found Yousuf's post.
Fortunately I have more good news for people who find this thread and have this problem. Lunn's, the plumbing supply company which Yousuf links to carries the original DAL flush valve cartridge which I guess is fairly expensive because it's hard if not impossible to find DAL parts in the UK. But DAL are now owned by Grohe and Grohe have the exact same Flush Valve with different part numbers and colours. While Lunn's will charge you £16.60 + shipping for DAL part number 20.26.28, I purchased a Grohe Discharge Piston (which is the name Grohe uses for the Flush Valve Cartridge) for a Grohe DAL 42137 - Single Flush Valve for £9.55 including shipping. In fact you can purchase the Grohe 42137 single flush valve itself (the whole unit including the cartridge) for about £18.
There are several stockists for these. I called Grohe and they offer phone numbers for several stockists. I contacted John Goslett & Co Ltd. www.johngoslett.com and had the part the next day. John Goslett don't know anything about DAL, so just say you want a Grohe Discharge Piston for a Grohe 42137 Single Flush Valve.

Worked for me as well, thanks Yousuf, I did not have much hair left to pull out. Just to say that the part itself (for the single flush) is also described as a 'Grohe Dal discharge piston 43554' which I can locate on a number of web sales sites for 5 to 6 pounds.

Just to say that Yousuf is absolutely spot on with his answer. I've just replaced my father in laws after spending the morning completely baffled by the problem, (and I'm a professional plumber!). 48 hours delivery from Lunn's and you can pay by credit card. Yousuf's just saved my time and my dad in law's money. Top man!

I have the same problem as yours and thanks to an ingenious neighbour who was a builder, plumber and the rest in a past life I have the answer. It's probably too late for you as your issue was back in 2007, but this will probably help someone else who comes searching here.
The problem is your Flush Valve as it's called. It's the valve that sits in the middle of the cistern and goes up and down when you press the button on the toilet to flush it. It's on this page http://www.lunns.net/cistern spares it's called the Dal 5443492. Flush Valve. have a look
Once you get this out and take apart the two separate moving parts the part which sits inside of the bigger valve which is part number Dal 20.26.28 Flush Valve Cartridge. The red screw in top comes off by unscrewing it and inside there is a flush valve washer. This tiny rubber washer is what’s causing the entire problem you're having. It's not creating a seal when the cistern is filling up and hence the water starts to leak.
My neighbour tried to look everywhere for the seal and couldn't get one. But I've now found the website I've given you above to get the parts from.
I'm not a plumber or even any good at D.I.Y. hence the poor explanation. But you have the part numbers and the make of the cistern. You should be up and running.
Good luck.

is it a duel flush or single flush mech with a chrome button in the lid ?
if so look at your flush mech it should look like a round tube about 8" tall. isolate the water from filling the cistern then hold the flush mech about half way down and turn about 1/4 of a turn and it will release from the bottom of the cistern.
then look at the part you have removed there should be a large rubber washer on the bottom.
is it sitting flat or starting to curl upwards ?
if curling upwards remove the washer clean and turn upside down when replacing.
clean the bottom part in the cistern where the washer sits and reinstall. turn on water and see if that cures it .
9/10 it works depending on how worn your washer is.
but make sure all the parts are clean of scale before replacing.
