LuxSoft in Cornwall UK offer a cheap but very effective disc conversion service for virtually all Starwriter & Starjet models. See http://www.luxsoft.demon.co.uk/lux/cconv.html

SHARP FONTWRITER DISCS ON PC's
There are all sorts of reasons why an old 720k format disc won't read on a modern PC, especially a laptop. Without more info, it's impossible to diagnose but reading the disc is not the whole story. Even if it did read OK, the files would contain much garbage ... so a professional conversion service like LuxSoft's is the cheapest option.

People often confuse a Canon Starwriter stand-alone WP with the Starwriter program from Sun. I think John Rogers is asking about the former.
Discounting the oddball Starwriter Pro 5000 & 7000 models, the discs are standard DOS format (720k and, later 1.44mb) and the wp files on them all have the extension TXT. I'll wager that the discs will read on a PC but John's problem is that double clicking on a file in Windows opens Notepad to yield much gobbledygook.
Answer is to use a file conversion utility. There is one downloadable from the Net for free but this loses all doc formatting and is also restricted in other ways. A proper program is available for around £100 but unless John has >20 discs, £5 per disc from a conversion company like LuxSoft (www.luxsoft.demon.co.uk) would be more economical.

Hi John.

The answer to this is really straightforward. Starwriter is produced by Sun Microsystems but is one of a number of Office packages which use the Open Document Format. Go to www.openoffice.org and download the free openoffice.org package. This should open the file for you.

If you really want to, you can save it to MS Word from there but there is no need to unless you want to write macros in MS Word for the file. Open Document files are generally considerably smaller than MS files.

That is usually the case with Microsoft products, they tend not to support formats other than Microsoft's - funny that.

You need to get a copy of Open Office or a product based on it e.g. Sun StarOffice. Open the the Starwriter files and then save them in a format that Word can understand .e.g .doc

Who knows you may get to like Open Office. It can do everything that Microsoft Office can (and more as you can see above) and its FREE.
